Capilano University (CapU) is a teaching-focused university driven by imaginative approaches to education and thoughtful engagement with the communities it serves. Based on Vancouver’s North Shore, at the foot of the Coastal mountains and 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver, the University also offers programs that serve the Sunshine Coast and the Sea-to-Sky corridor. CapU prioritizes offering distinct university experiences for students and supporting well-being among its campus community.
As a primarily undergraduate university, CapU students benefit from small class sizes with an average of 20 students per class, which allows instructors to get to know their students and foster their potential. It offers over 100 programs in areas as diverse as film and animation, early childhood education and kinesiology. Graduate programs are offered in business, tourism management, applied behaviour analysis and early childhood education. CapU’s Officne of Creative Activity, Research and Scholarship is rapidly growing hands-on research opportunities for students. The University continues to nurture new interdisciplinary academic research opportunities; students can take part in collaborations and learn through academic mentoring and support.
Founded as a college in 1968, Capilano College was re-designated by the Province of British Columbia as Capilano University in 2008. CapU’s campuses are situated on the territories of the LíỈwat, xʷməθkʷəỷəm (Musqueam), shíshálh (Sechelt), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and SəỈílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Named in honour of Chief Joe Capilano, an important leader of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation of the Coast Salish Peoples, CapU is committed to Truth and Reconciliation, Indigenization and decolonizing approaches.
