Designated Smudging Areas Lakehead University permits the on-campus use of burning any or all of the four sacred medicines in connection with Indigenous spiritual practices for personal use or at cultural and educational events, meetings and relevant classroom presentations. Designated smudging areas exist throughout campus where advance notice is not required. Financial Services Assistance with applications for bursaries, sponsorship, and OSAP Assistance with scholarships and awards applications Gitigaan The Lakehead University garden called Gitigaan in Ojibwe is a gathering space for people to share and learn about the significance of traditional medicines and to create an awareness of traditional knowledge. It promotes Indigenous presence and community involvement on campus. The garden's development, in the fashion of a medicine wheel, demonstrates a balanced approach to planting and growing traditional plants and is also a space for individual reflection and quiet meditation. Monthly sweat lodge ceremonies are conducted by a local Elder at the Lakehead University Sweat Lodge Site. Each year the entire community is invited to experience Indigenous culture at the annual Fall Harvest. Elders share tipi, sweat lodge and traditional medicine teachings, traditional food harvesting and preparation, technologies and much more. Participants can also sample a number of traditional foods.
